The Ondo State Police Command has arrested 10 nationals of the Republic of Benin in connection with an illegal human trafficking operation uncovered in Akure, the state capital.
According to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawal Adebowale, the suspects were apprehended at various residences along Oda Road, Akure, on July 31, 2025. The individuals reportedly smuggled themselves into Nigeria illegally, many with expired or no travel documents.
The suspects include Atouh Joel, Mohamed Amidou, Saibou Akateliwe, Abdul Jahao, Ndah Severin, Kumpori Ruth, Kumpori Martin, Tatiana Dianne, Martias Sossa, and Ndapola Oba Giov.
Adebowale revealed that the group had conspired to bring a 29-year-old Congolese man, Nzaou Yelica Christ-Olse, into Nigeria without his consent. The victim was lured with promises of assistance in launching an online business but was ultimately abandoned upon arrival.
“The offence constitutes a serious violation of immigration and anti-trafficking laws,” the CP stated. “The victim is currently safe in government custody and receiving the necessary support.”

He further disclosed that the case has been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities that may aid law enforcement in curbing cross-border crimes.
This arrest underscores growing concerns over international human trafficking networks operating within Nigeria. Authorities are calling for enhanced border control, increased public awareness, and cooperation among regional law enforcement agencies.
