The Federal Government has raised a red flag over potential widespread flooding expected to hit 19 states in Nigeria over a five-day period, from August 5 to August 9, 2025. The National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment issued the urgent alert, warning residents and stakeholders to take immediate precautions.
According to Punch, the flood warning comes after intense rainfall triggered destructive floods in Ogun and Gombe states. The impact is already being felt in several other states including Lagos, Plateau, Anambra, and Delta.
A comprehensive list of affected areas includes locations across Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Cross River, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Gombe.
The situation echoes previous flooding disasters. In September 2024, a dam collapse in Borno State claimed at least 150 lives and displaced over 419,000 residents. Earlier in May 2025, flooding in Mokwa, Niger State, reportedly killed over 200 people and displaced thousands.

The crisis has prompted the National Economic Council (NEC) to approve significant intervention funds, including ₦3 billion for each state, ₦10 billion for NEMA, and ₦1.5 billion for key ministries to mitigate the impact.
Recent NEMA statistics confirm the severe humanitarian toll: 165 deaths, 82 missing, and over 119,000 affected persons. Children and women are said to be the most impacted demographic.
With rainfall expected to continue, the government urges Nigerians in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds and monitor official updates.
