In a statement released on Friday, August 15, 2025, police spokesperson DSP Timfon John confirmed that Gideon was apprehended on Thursday following a tip-off from concerned community members. The suspect reportedly paraded himself as an eye specialist and treated people with a concoction of olive oil, juice, and water, claiming it could cure eye defects.

According to the police, Gideon allegedly gathered more than 300 people in each of three villages — Ikot Akpan Itam, Ikot Abasi Itam, and Nung Ikot Itam — charging N500 per person for the so-called treatment. Investigators say he collected large sums of money while putting residents’ health at serious risk.

A medical team from the Ministry of Health later confirmed that the substances were unsafe and unapproved for medical use. The suspect, who confessed to having no medical qualifications, is currently in police custody.

“The Command warns members of the public to be cautious of quacks who pose as professionals, especially in matters concerning their health,” DSP John said in the statement. “The suspect, Gabriel Gideon of Nsit-Ubium, will face prosecution once investigations are completed.”

Residents have expressed shock at how many people fell victim to the fake doctor’s scheme, urging authorities to increase awareness campaigns about medical fraud. Police say the investigation is ongoing and more charges may follow.
