Tragedy at Lagos Beach as Nigerian Driver Drowns During Outing With Indian Expats

Tarkwa Bay Lagos drowning tragedy involving Nigerian driver and Indian expatriates

A Nigerian driver, identified only as Kingsley, tragically drowned at Tarkwa-Bay Beach in Lagos during a leisure trip with two Indian expatriates. The heartbreaking incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to a post shared by security analyst Zagazola Makama on X (formerly Twitter), Kingsley had accompanied the Indian nationals—employees of Dangote Group—to the popular beach for relaxation. However, shortly after their arrival, he reportedly entered the water and was swept away by strong ocean currents.

Despite immediate rescue efforts, Kingsley could not be saved, and as of the time of filing this report, his body is yet to be recovered.

“A Nigerian driver identified simply as Kingsley has been declared missing after drowning in the sea at Tarkwa-Bay beach, Lagos,” Makama posted. He cited police sources who said the two Indian expatriates reported the matter at the Tarkwa-Bay Police Division shortly after the incident.

Police detectives were dispatched to the scene to assess the situation and begin recovery operations, which are still ongoing.

Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, proved unsuccessful. Calls and messages sent by journalists, including PUNCH Metro, were not returned.

This tragic event follows a similar case reported in October 2024, where a 45-year-old man identified as Kazeem drowned in a river at Odo Tente, a boundary area between Lagos and Ogun states. In that case, the victim had allegedly consumed a substance suspected to be Colorado (a type of synthetic cannabinoid), which led him to run uncontrollably and leap into the river.

Kingsley’s drowning has once again raised concerns about beach safety, supervision, and the unpredictable nature of strong ocean currents around popular Lagos coastal zones.

Authorities are urging beachgoers to be cautious and follow safety guidelines to prevent further tragedies.
