The Lagos State Government has mandated psychiatric evaluations for 18 motorists caught driving against traffic. This bold move, according to authorities, aims to promote public safety and restore discipline on Lagos roads.
The directive was confirmed in a statement issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) through its spokesperson, Taofeek Adebayo, on Sunday. He explained that the move is part of a broader strategy to reform reckless driving behavior, protect lives, and maintain urban traffic order.
“LASTMA has completed frameworks to prosecute 18 motorists arrested for driving against traffic flow. As part of the process, each offender must undergo a psychiatric test,” Adebayo noted.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized that the psychological assessments are not punitive but preventive. “The goal is not to stigmatize but to safeguard Lagosians. This reflects global best practices in traffic psychology enforcement,” he stated.

Despite awareness campaigns and public education, some drivers continue to flout traffic laws, causing congestion and deadly accidents. This initiative, authorities say, is both corrective and deterrent — helping weed out dangerous drivers and warning others.
Bakare-Oki added, “This psychiatric evaluation measure is more than enforcement. It’s a civic duty to ensure Lagos roads are safe for all.”
The government’s resolve also includes encouraging motorists to comply with all traffic regulations. The statement called on all residents to embrace responsible driving habits and join efforts to maintain order and safety on Lagos roads.
Lagos has consistently struggled with traffic offenses, including one-way driving and disregard for traffic signals — behaviors that contribute to the city’s notorious gridlock and frequent accidents.
With this latest move, Lagos becomes one of the few states in Nigeria taking a psychological approach to traffic law enforcement.
