Death Sentence for Ex-Commissioner’s Guard and Cook in Shocking Katsina Murder

Katsina Court Sentences Ex-Commissioner’s Killers to Death

Justice has finally caught up with the killers of former Katsina State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Rabe Nasir, as a Katsina High Court sentenced his former security guard and cook to death by hanging.

The judgment was delivered on Wednesday by Justice Ibrahim Mashi of Katsina State High Court 9. The convicted men — Shamsu Lawal, a former guard, and Tasi’u Rabi’u, the late commissioner’s cook — were found guilty of poisoning their boss after failing in an attempt to rob him.

The court also sentenced another former guard, Sani Sa’adu, to five years imprisonment for concealing the murder, while a female suspect, Gift Bako, was acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence.

The prosecution explained that a joint police and hospital investigation, including an autopsy, confirmed the presence of poison in Nasir’s body. The evidence pointed directly to the domestic staff who had been trusted with the ex-commissioner’s safety.

The presiding judge, in delivering the sentence, emphasized that the evidence was overwhelming and that the court must uphold justice. The verdict caused visible reactions in the courtroom — the convicted men were shaken as security operatives took them away, while Bako’s family and legal team expressed joy over her acquittal.

Gift Bako’s lawyer, Shedrack, said the ruling was fair and “based on truth.” Meanwhile, Ahmad Murtala Kankia, lawyer to the convicts, pleaded for leniency, citing the fact that the men had families who depended on them.

The late Rabe Nasir served as Katsina State Commissioner for Science and Technology under Governor Aminu Bello Masari. He had also represented Mani and Bindawa LGAs as a federal legislator and previously worked in Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS).

This verdict brings closure to a case that shocked the northern political scene and highlights the dangers of betrayal from within.
