A 59-year-old man who had been impersonating top political and security figures across Nigeria has finally been arrested in a major sting operation by the Kaduna State Police Command.
According to a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, the suspect, Aminu Yarima, was arrested on July 19, 2025, at his residence located at No. 6 GRA Government Quarters, Keffi, Nasarawa State.
Yarima, who hails from Bichi LGA in Kano State, was captured after weeks of surveillance and credible intelligence gathering. The police revealed that he had impersonated several key figures including state governors, the Chairman of the EFCC, Chairman of FIRS, the IGP, and even spouses of senior public officeholders.
The arrest followed a search of his home, which uncovered five mobile phones, 23 SIM cards, and numerous diaries containing contacts of top politicians, military officials, and traditional rulers across all 36 Nigerian states.
“Upon arrest, the suspect confessed to impersonating multiple high-profile individuals including the Executive Governors of Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Ondo States; the EFCC Chairman; FIRS Chairman; and the Inspector-General of Police,” Hassan stated.
Police say Yarima used these impersonations to allegedly commit fraud and other crimes while posing as the aides or spouses of top-ranking officials.
The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna, Rabiu Muhammad, hailed the operation as a major success. “This arrest is a significant breakthrough in the Command’s ongoing efforts to dismantle networks of impersonators and fraudsters who undermine public trust and national institutions,” he said.
The suspect is currently under intense investigation and will be charged to court once the inquiry is completed.
Kaduna residents have applauded the police action, which comes amid rising concerns over impersonation fraud targeting individuals, businesses, and even government entities.
Security analysts warn that the sophistication of impersonation networks in Nigeria poses a growing threat to institutional integrity. Authorities are urging Nigerians to verify identities and report suspicious behavior to law enforcement.
The police assured the public that they remain committed to rooting out criminal elements using deceit to exploit trust, emphasizing that impersonation will no longer be tolerated.
