Tragedy struck the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) community in Awka, Anambra State, on Thursday night as a male student lost his life after allegedly jumping from a three-storey building under the influence of mkpurummiri, a highly addictive and dangerous hard drug.

The horrific incident took place around 8:00 p.m. at a private student lodge located near Royal Kitchen junction, just a few minutes from the university’s main entrance. Witnesses reported hearing a loud thud, followed by a chaotic scene as residents discovered the student lying in a pool of blood.
Despite efforts to save him, the young man was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. His identity remains undisclosed as officials are working to notify the family before releasing further details.
According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased had consumed mkpurummiri — a street name for methamphetamine, which has become notorious for triggering hallucinations, aggressive behavior, and in some cases, self-harm.
