Veteran Nigerian rapper Reminisce has stirred up conversation in the hip-hop community after boldly declaring that the genre is driven by “pure skill,” not money or streaming numbers.
His statement comes amid ongoing debates surrounding authenticity and dominance in Nigeria’s rap scene.
Speaking during a recent episode of the On The Record podcast, where he appeared alongside fellow rapper Vector, Reminisce emphasized that respect in hip-hop must be earned through lyrical ability and not wealth or social media buzz.
“Hip-hop is the only genre that doesn’t respect numbers or money. No matter how much money you make, you can’t buy the respect of the hip-hop world.” he said. “You have to earn it. That’s one thing I love about Hip-hop. People must say, ‘Vector is a good rapper, he’s a legend.’”
The ‘Local Rappers’ crooner referenced the recent global rap clash between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, pointing out that Kendrick’s victory in public opinion was purely because of his lyrical superiority.
“If you like have 5 trillion streams and name your album the greatest, nobody cares. Rap respects pure skills. That’s why Kendrick Lamar is widely seen as the winner.”
The comments by Reminisce come as tensions rise in the Nigerian hip-hop scene, especially with the feud between rising stars Odumodublvck and Blaqbonez drawing headlines. His take has sparked fresh debates among fans about what truly defines greatness in rap.
