Customs intercepts 1,682 wraps of cannabis concealed inside corpse

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially approved new, higher fees for the issuance of number plates and driver’s licenses, with the updated price structure taking effect from June 8, 2025.

The price review was confirmed by the Joint Tax Board (JTB), impacting both private and commercial vehicle owners nationwide.

Under the new structure, a driver’s license will now cost ₦15,000 for a 3-year validity and ₦21,000 for a 5-year validity for motor vehicle drivers. For tricycle operators, licenses will cost ₦7,000 and ₦11,000 respectively.

This development has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians, especially amid rising economic hardship. Many road users have expressed concern over the affordability of essential services now being priced at premium rates.

Analysts warn that the fee hike could increase the number of unregistered vehicles on the road as citizens struggle to meet the financial demands. Others, however, view the decision as part of a broader revenue drive by the government.

The Joint Tax Board is expected to issue further clarifications and guidelines in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for the smooth implementation of the revised pricing.
