What began as a peaceful protest in Makurdi, Benue State, on Sunday turned violent, leading to the tragic death of a truck driver and the arrest of 14 suspects.

According to a statement by the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, Udeme Edet, the protest started at Wurukum Roundabout as youths gathered to express frustration over recent security issues in the state.
While the demonstration was initially peaceful, it was later hijacked by violent elements.
The police revealed that the protestors became aggressive when the Deputy Governor of Benue State, John Ode, accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, attempted to engage with them.

Officers swiftly intervened with smoke and water cannons to de-escalate tensions and evacuate the Deputy Governor safely. Thankfully, no injuries were recorded during the operation.
However, the situation escalated further on the outskirts of Makurdi, where a separate group of hoodlums obstructed a roadway in Apir.
They forcefully halted a truck and set it ablaze with the driver still inside. Authorities have yet to identify the victim.
So far, 14 suspects linked to the violence have been arrested and will be prosecuted, Edet confirmed. Investigations are still ongoing to capture other perpetrators and those who instigated the deadly incident.
The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lawful civic expression while condemning any form of violence, destruction, or lawlessness.

“We commend the responsible conduct of peaceful protesters and assure the public of our unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security across the State,” the statement read.
