Frustrated Nigerian parents have stormed the offices of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to protest their children’s unexpectedly low scores in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
According to reports, the protest follows JAMB’s recent disclosure that over 70% of candidates scored below 200 out of 400—a sharp decline compared to previous years.
Many parents argued that their children, who had performed well in past JAMB exams and school assessments, were shocked by the unusually poor results.
Videos circulating online show parents at a JAMB office demanding an immediate review of the scores, with some alleging possible errors in grading. One parent said, “My child scored 280 last year but got 150 this time—something is wrong!”
JAMB has yet to officially respond to the protests but had earlier stated that the exam was conducted fairly. However, the controversy has reignited debates over Nigeria’s education system and the transparency of UTME grading.
