NYSC Urges Corps Members: Transform SAED Skills into Thriving Businesses After Camp

NYSC Corps Members Engaged in SAED Programme Activities

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called on corps members to build upon the skills acquired during their orientation camp, emphasizing the importance of transforming these skills into viable businesses.

This appeal was made by the NYSC Director of Media, Chukwuemeka Mgbemena, during a visit to the 2025 Batch A, Stream 1 corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

According to Punch, Mgbemena urged corps members to adhere strictly to the scheme's rules and regulations, highlighting that discipline and commitment are essential for success. He emphasized the relevance of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, stating, "The world is ruled by skills. White-collar jobs are fading. NYSC offers you a rare chance to be empowered — take it seriously.

The SAED programme aims to empower young graduates with practical skills for self-reliance and nation-building. Mgbemena noted that the programme has produced entrepreneurs among previous corps members who are now thriving as business owners and contributing to the nation's GDP.

He also advised corps members to avoid unnecessary journeys and to obtain approval from the State Coordinator for any essential travel, emphasizing personal security. Group Captain Ibrahim Bukar from Defence Headquarters, Abuja, encouraged corps members to integrate into their host communities by registering with local leaders, which would ensure they are noticed if absent for some time.

Mrs. Christina Salmwang, Lagos NYSC Coordinator, reported that corps members had adapted well to camp life, participating in SAED, advocacy lectures, training, games, and other social activities. She praised the Lagos State Government and partner agencies for their continued support of the orientation camp.

This initiative aligns with NYSC's vision to promote national unity and empower youths through orientation camp programmes, encouraging corps members to leverage their acquired skills for personal and national development.
