A heartbreaking incident in Benin City has claimed the lives of a 32-year-old fashion designer, Mrs. Sarah David, and her three-month-old baby. The tragedy occurred on May 7, 2025, when the victims stepped on a live electric cable submerged in floodwaters along the Benin-Agbor road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the young mother was carrying her newborn on her back when the electrocution occurred. A quick-thinking passerby saved her second child by carrying them through a safer route. The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) was immediately alerted to cut power to the area.
The grieving husband, Mr. Samuel Ibom, revealed his wife was the family's breadwinner. "I just got a new job days before this tragedy," he said, appealing for help to complete her bride price payment before burial. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the electrical fault that caused the fatal accident.
