Nigerian sprint sensation, Favour Ofili, has etched her name in the history books by breaking the world record in the women’s 150 metres, clocking a blistering 15.85 seconds at the 2025 Adidas Atlanta City Games.
The race, held at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, saw the 22-year-old Ofili become the first woman ever to run under 16 seconds in the 150m, surpassing the previous mark of 16.23s set by Bahamian Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018.
Her feat lit up the vibrant, fan-filled street meet, designed to bring elite athletes closer to the public in a carnival-style athletics experience.
Taking to social media after the race, Ofili expressed gratitude, writing on X: “For the Lord is Good.”
The event also showcased strong performances from other Nigerian athletes. Reigning 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan impressed in her heat, running 12.53 seconds to place second behind American Keni Harrison (12.44s), thereby qualifying for the final. This marks a solid build-up for Amusan, who has shown consistent form this season with previous times of 12.74s and 12.66s in China.
Meanwhile, Udodi Onwuzurike continued his comeback campaign with a season’s best of 10.20 seconds in the men’s 100m heats, finishing just behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine (10.13s) and qualifying for the final.
Ofili’s triumph has sparked celebrations across Nigeria’s athletics community and raised expectations ahead of upcoming championships.
