Abia Government Extends Heartwarming Support to 106-Year-Old Akara Vendor, Touching Lives

In a heartwarming display of compassion and recognition, the Abia State government has extended a helping hand to a remarkable 106-year-old Akara seller, Ma Chidinma Eluwa. The centenarian, who has become a beloved figure along Owerri road in the Isigate area of Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, has been placed on a monthly stipend to support her well-being.

Despite the challenges life has presented, including the loss of her husband and the presence of only one living son, Mama Eluwa's indomitable spirit has kept her committed to her craft. She continues to fry the beloved local delicacy, Akara, for her numerous customers, even at her advanced age.

It was on July 29th, 2023, that the Chief of Staff to the Abia State governor, Caleb Ajagba, chanced upon Mama Eluwa at her modest shop. Drawn by the sight of customers eagerly queuing for her delicacies, he inquired about her story. Learning that she had been dedicated to the Akara business for many decades, the Chief of Staff decided to intervene on her behalf.

After interacting with Mama Eluwa and recognizing her significance, the Chief of Staff recommended her case to the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable Groups and Poverty Alleviation. This marked the beginning of a touching journey to provide Mama Eluwa with the support she deserved.

On August 9th, 2023, Mama Chidinma Eluwa was welcomed to the office of Mrs. Ifeoma Thomas, the Special Assistant responsible for vulnerable groups and poverty alleviation. In a heartfelt gesture, Mrs. Thomas conveyed financial assistance and plans to ensure the sustainability of Mama Eluwa's business. She was also registered in the National Identity Numbers (NIN) system to facilitate the opening of a bank account for her convenience.

Beyond the monthly stipend, the Abia State government is committed to bolstering Mama Eluwa's business through financial backing. Plans are also underway to celebrate her upcoming birthday and her incredible longevity.

In response to this overwhelming support, Mama Chidinma Eluwa expressed her gratitude to Governor Alex Otti, Chief of Staff Caleb Ajagba, and Mrs. Ifeoma Thomas for their genuine concern. She acknowledged that the assistance from the Abia State government would contribute to her continued well-being and longevity.

With a message of wisdom for the youth, Mama Eluwa encouraged them to embrace education, skills acquisition, and a crime-free path, contributing to the betterment of society.

Mrs. Ifeoma Thomas, the Special Assistant, expressed the government's commitment to Mama Eluwa's welfare. "We're going to place her on a monthly stipend and also open a bank account for her," she affirmed. She further outlined the plan, stating, "First, we have enlisted her and her son in the Nigerian Identity Management Agency (NIMC) register. Subsequently, we'll establish an account in her name, and her son will be entrusted with the ATM card. This way, we'll ensure her stipend reaches her account at the end of each month."
