Senegalese President Macky Sall Launches National Dialogue Initiative Amidst Tensions Ahead of Presidential Elections

Senegal's President, Macky Sall, announced his national dialogue initiative on Wednesday, a day after the initial announcement.

The initiative comes nine months ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for February 2022. In his address, Sall emphasized the importance of democracy and freedom, while also being firm in the face of growing tensions.

He condemned all acts of violence that cause harm to the country and its citizens, and called on all socio-political groups to work together to defend the nation's model of society. The initiative is seen as a fundamental step towards promoting peace, stability, and national cohesion.

Amid growing public unrest leading up to a pending court decision against political opponent Ousmane Sonko, the presidential initiative has taken shape.

In response, some opposition parties have strongly criticized the presidential dialogue and have vowed to launch a counter-dialogue. Meanwhile, President Macky Sall has remained tight-lipped about his intentions to seek a controversial third mandate.
