FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura to Step Down, Leaves Legacy of Leadership and Women's Football Advancement

Fatma Samoura, the first woman and first non-European to become FIFA's secretary general in 2016, is set to step down by the end of this year to spend more time with her family. 

After a distinguished career with the United Nations, the 60-year-old Senegalese was appointed at a crucial time for FIFA, following a series of scandals. 

FIFA credits Samoura with restoring the organization's credibility after her appointment, while under her leadership, women's football has reached new heights. 

Samoura's final objective as leader is the successful staging of the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which runs from July 20 to August 20. FIFA has yet to announce her successor.
