Global coalition launches campaign against misinformation

In a move geared towards combatting misinformation and its devastating consequences, a group of experts has launched the International Panel for the Information Environment.

According to a statement, the IPIE is modelled after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, created in 1988 to determine the state of knowledge on climate change and provide regular scientific assessments of its implications and risks.

It is understood that the IPIE would engage leading data scientists, misinformation experts, tech leaders, anthropologists, psychologists, sociologists, neuroscientists, journalists, and humanitarian activists.

The experts are expected to review data and scientific literature to build an international consensus on the scope and impacts of misinformation and  analyse potential solutions.

It quoted IPIE’s founders, Sheldon Himelfarb and Phil Howard, as well as their peers around the world, as expressing optimism about the imperativeness of pooling expertise together to tackle misinformation with every tool in the box.

The consortium is expected to share  ideas with global leaders when the Nobel Prize Summit commences in Washington DC between May 24 to 26. Punchng
