At least 15 residents have been killed following an early-morning attack by suspected armed herders on the Efeyi community in the Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State.
The assailants reportedly stormed the peaceful village around 5:00 AM on Tuesday, opening fire sporadically on sleeping residents and destroying properties before security personnel could arrive on the scene.
Otukpo LGA Chairman, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed the tragedy, stating that 14 dead bodies had been recovered initially, with several other villagers sustaining severe injuries.

Ogiri described the assault as completely unprovoked, noting that widespread panic has forced residents of neighboring communities to flee their ancestral homes out of fear of further attacks.
Reacting to the incident, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives while commending the Benue State Police Command for their swift response.
According to a statement issued by Chief Press Secretary Kula Tersoo, police operatives engaged the fleeing attackers in a gun battle, neutralizing two armed suspects who were providing cover for the gang.
Local reports suggest the heightened violence across Otukpo and Ohimini LGAs may be linked to ongoing tensions following the June 24, 2026 killing of the state MACBAN chairman, Risku Mohammed.
