United States President Donald Trump suggested that NBA superstar LeBron James might be "a racist" during a White House news conference on Friday, following James' announcement that he would sign a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 41-year-old basketball icon, who is the NBA's all-time leading scorer, decided against retirement to join Philadelphia for what he described as the "last decision" of his professional career.
When asked by journalists to weigh in on the long-standing debate over whether James or Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time, President Trump unhesitatingly selected Jordan, citing his personal friendship with the Chicago Bulls legend.
Trump then shifted his comments toward James' longstanding political criticism of his administration and past endorsements of Democratic candidates, questioning the NBA star's motives and character.
"Michael Jordan is a guy that's a friend of mine. I play golf with him. He's a really good guy. I think LeBron is, maybe he's a racist, but maybe he doesn't like Trump. I don't know. I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way."
