Ghana Government Steps In to Rescue Citizen After Viral Xenophobic Assault in South Africa
The Ghanaian government has officially moved to repatriate Emmanuel Asamoah, a Ghanaian national who became the face of recent xenophobic unrest in South Africa.
The decision follows a viral video showing Asamoah being accosted by a group in Durban who accused him of illegal residency and "refusing to fix his own country."
In the footage, a woman is heard telling Asamoah, "We don't want Africans here anymore... refusing to fix their own countries... Can we come to Ghana and do what you're doing?" Following the traumatic incident, Asamoah appeared on television pleading for his fellow Ghanaians to return home and build their nation.
Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Ablakwa, confirmed on Sunday that the state has located Asamoah and will facilitate his relocation back to Ghana at no cost.
