AIG Orders Cross-State Security Blitz as 15 Passengers are Abducted Along Calabar-Oron Waterway
Panic has gripped commuters in the South-South following the abduction of 15 passengers along the Calabar-Oron waterway on Friday, April 16, 2026.
The travelers were reportedly ambushed by gunmen while traveling by ferry from Safe Anchor Beach in Calabar.
The Calabar–Oron route has become a high-risk alternative for commuters looking to avoid the dilapidated Calabar–Itu Road.
Confirming the incident, ASP Sunday Eitokpah stated that the police are working in close synergy with the Nigerian Navy and the Akwa Ibom State Command.
In a decisive move, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone 6, Auwal Musa Mohammed, has ordered the Commissioners of Police in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states to dismantle all jurisdictional boundaries.
The AIG mandated an intelligence-driven operation to "dominate the waterways" and secure the victims' release.
“The rescue of the abducted victims remains a top operational priority. We will pursue the perpetrators relentlessly until justice is served,” the AIG warned in a statement issued via Zonal PPRO, DSP Jefferson Osupe.
