Residents of Sheka Sabuwar Gandu, a community within the Kano metropolis, have been left in deep shock following the tragic killing of a pregnant woman and her 18-month-old son in their home.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday evening, but came to public attention around 8:00 pm when the woman’s husband returned from work and found their residence locked from the outside. Concerned by the unusual situation, he reportedly forced the door open, only to discover the bodies of his wife and child inside the house.
Community sources said the victims had been attacked by unknown persons who allegedly gained access to the home while the woman and her child were alone. The circumstances surrounding the attack have heightened fear and anxiety among residents, many of whom described the incident as unprecedented in the area.
Confirming the development, a community leader, Ahmad Sani, expressed serious concern over the lack of adequate security in the neighbourhood. He revealed that residents had previously pooled resources to construct a police outpost in a bid to improve safety, but said the facility had remained unmanned.
“For a long time now, the community built a police outpost through our collective efforts, but the authorities have not deployed officers to man the place,” Sani said.
He appealed to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, to urgently deploy security personnel to the area, warning that the absence of law enforcement presence had exposed residents to repeated security threats.
When contacted on Sunday, the Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident. The command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, said investigations had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and to identify those responsible.
“Yes, the incident happened, and the command is currently investigating the matter,” Haruna stated.
The killing has reignited concerns over community safety and violent crime in parts of Kano State. Residents are calling on security agencies to intensify patrols, activate community policing structures, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
The incident is also not the first reported case involving the killing of a pregnant woman in Kano, further deepening public concern over rising insecurity.
