The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man for the alleged defilement and sexual abuse of a nine-year-old girl in the Nayi-Nawa area of Damaturu, the state capital.

The command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the arrest in an official statement. According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had repeatedly lured the young victim into a shop located within the timber shed area of Damaturu to carry out the act.

“The victim was rescued and taken for a medical examination, while the suspect is in custody," the statement from SP Abdulkarim read. It further added that “Investigation is ongoing and will be transferred to the Gender Unit at the State CID for further action and prosecution.”

In a related development, the police command also disclosed that its operatives had made separate arrests concerning robbery and fraud incidents in Damaturu and Bade local government areas. The command stated that the suspects in those cases had confessed to the crimes and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Meanwhile, the Yobe State Police Command expressed deep concern over a rise in violent incidents linked to youth clashes in some communities. The command attributed these clashes to underlying issues such as farmer-herder disputes, drug abuse, and other social vices.

In response to these emerging security challenges, the police assured the public that it is intensifying surveillance and proactive policing measures. The goal is to curb the trend of grievous harm and injuries resulting from these conflicts and to ensure the safety of all residents across the state.
