A farming couple in Nasarawa State is fighting for their lives after suspected herders launched a brutal attack, severing the wife's left wrist and inflicting a severe machete wound on her husband's head for daring to protect their farmland.
The horrific incident occurred on Saturday in the Barkin Abdullahi community, Lafia Local Council. According to an eyewitness, James Ovey, who spoke with The Guardian, the violence erupted after the assailants allowed their cattle to graze on the couple's farm. When the victims attempted to intervene and stop the destruction of their crops, they were overpowered by the herders.
The attackers then subjected them to a savage assault. The husband sustained a deep machete cut to his head, while the wife suffered an even more grievous injury—her left wrist was completely severed. Following the brutal attack, the couple was abducted from their farm before eventually being released and rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Lafia, the state capital, for emergency treatment.

In a separate but related incident highlighting the escalating insecurity in the region, Mr. Yusuf Agbo Nobaga reported that his wife was abducted in Giza, Keana Local Council. A source revealed that gunmen invaded the community late on Friday night, firing sporadically before taking Mr. Nobaga and his wife to an unknown location.
A resident of Giza, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the pervasive fear gripping the community. “Nothing has been heard from them since yesterday night. We hope they are safe because there was much shooting. We are living in fear right now. People are even moving out of the community for fear of further attack,” the resident stated, adding that locals feel helpless and are resorting to prayers as all attempts to end the incessant violence have failed.
When contacted for an official response, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, stated that the latest abduction in Barkin Abdullahi had not yet been formally reported to the police. He urged residents to promptly report all cases of kidnapping and to notify security agencies of any suspicious persons or movements in their areas, as the state government promises new security measures to tackle the rising violence.
