A festive chieftaincy title celebration in the Idimu area of Lagos State turned into a scene of tragedy on Tuesday as four individuals were electrocuted, with one confirmed dead. The fatal incident occurred on Anjorin Street in the Alimosho Local Government Area when a party canopy made contact with a naked live wire.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tragedy unfolded when a sand truck attempted to navigate the street but found its path blocked by a canopy erected for the party. In an effort to assist, some party guests and a motor boy from the truck began to lift the canopy to clear the road.
An eyewitness, Femi Ajiboye, explained that during this process, the metal frame of the canopy inadvertently touched a naked electric wire lying on the ground. “As they lifted the canopy, its metal frame touched the live wire, and they were electrocuted. People could not immediately understand what was happening until they saw them fall to the ground,” Ajiboye stated.

The electric shock caused instant panic, bringing the celebration to an abrupt and chaotic end. The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
A resident who gave his name as Olajide confirmed the fatality, stating, “The whole area became chaotic the moment the incident happened... Four of them were taken to the hospital, but the motor boy didn’t make it. The three other party guests were admitted and are currently receiving treatment.”
It was reported that the family of the deceased motor boy, who has not yet been identified, later retrieved his remains for burial. The incident has raised further concerns about the poor management of electrical infrastructure and the enforcement of safety guidelines in Lagos State.
When contacted for an official reaction, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer stated that she was initially not aware of the incident. Subsequent attempts to reach her for a follow-up confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
