The community of Ikoyi in Ilorin, Kwara State, has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl, Nabilat, who fell into a surface well and drowned while fetching water for domestic use on Saturday morning.
According to a reliable source, the heartbreaking incident occurred at approximately 10:35 a.m. on Busari Alao Street in the Irewolede area. The young girl was engaged in the routine chore of drawing water when the accident happened. A neighbour, identified as Mayowa, immediately placed an emergency call to the Kwara State Fire Service upon witnessing the tragedy.

In an official statement, the spokesperson for the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the agency's response. He stated that the brigade was summoned by Mr. Mayowa and that their operatives successfully recovered the girl's body from the well. “According to the report, the girl went to fetch water and, during the process, one of her legs suddenly slipped, causing her to fall into the well,” Adekunle explained, detailing the cause of the fatal accident. The recovered body was subsequently handed over to a grieving family member.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed profound sadness over the incident. He used the opportunity to issue a crucial public safety advisory, urging communities to exercise greater caution in their daily activities, especially around open wells and other water bodies. Furthermore, Prince Falade strongly advised families to “refrain from sending underage children on dangerous errands,” highlighting the preventable nature of such tragedies and the importance of assigning age-appropriate tasks to children.
