The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a six-year-old child from suspected traffickers in a major breakthrough against child theft and sexual crimes in the state.

According to a press statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the rescue operation followed intelligence-led investigations that traced the victim to an alleged foster parent in Ondo State. The child has since been reunited with his biological mother.
Ikenga explained that the case originated from a report filed at Okpoko Police Station before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Gender Unit, for further probe. He added that all suspects involved have been charged at the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Court.

In a related case, police operatives on August 13 arrested one Uchenna Nweke, 18, in Ebenebe community, Awka North LGA, for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl.
Narrating the disturbing incident, Ikenga said:
“Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect forced his way into the bathroom where the victim was bathing and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. Medical reports have since confirmed his culpability.”
The suspect is set to be arraigned in court on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has vowed that the command will not relent in protecting children and vulnerable groups from abuse and trafficking. He assured that perpetrators of such crimes would face the full wrath of the law.
The twin developments have drawn praise from child rights advocates, who commended the police for swift action while also calling for stronger community surveillance to combat rising cases of child trafficking and sexual violence in Nigeria.
With these arrests and rescue operations, the Anambra police have sent a strong message that child exploitation will not be tolerated in the state.
