NDLEA arrests drug kingpin, finds cannabis in microwaves at Lagos Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded another major victory in its ongoing war against narcotics, following the arrest of a drug trafficker, Ezenwegbu Chike, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The suspect was linked to a consignment of 23 parcels of Loud (a potent strain of cannabis) weighing 11.3kg, cleverly hidden in imported microwaves from Thailand.

According to a statement released on Sunday by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the cargo arrived via Ethiopian Airlines from Bangkok through Addis Ababa, and was intercepted on Monday, July 7, 2025, after intelligence flagged it for a detailed inspection.

“The Loud consignment was part of a consolidated cargo… During a thorough search, 23 parcels of loud weighing 11.3kg concealed in new microwaves were recovered,” Babafemi stated.

In a related operation, NDLEA officers at the export shed of the Lagos airport uncovered 400 grams of cocaine and phenacetine stashed inside lipsticks bound for Malabo, Guinea. Just a week earlier, another consignment of 420 grams of cocaine was found in 84 lipstick tubes heading to the UK.

Investigations led to the arrest of Ezeikwelume Prince Afam, a businessman operating at the Trade Fair Complex, Lagos.

In a breakthrough that capped a year-long pursuit, NDLEA operatives also arrested Okechukwu Izugha, alias Okey Omeogo, a notorious drug kingpin previously linked to a 9kg cocaine seizure in 2024. He was apprehended at his wife’s shop in the Ijesha Market on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

His wife, Maureen Izugha, had earlier been convicted for attempting to traffic 500 grams of cocainein January 2025 and was sentenced to two years in prison.

This string of arrests underscores NDLEA’s unwavering commitment to dismantling drug networks operating within and outside Nigeria.
