Tension has gripped Ijeda Ijesa community in Osun State following the killing of an Amotekun operative, Samuel Tope, during a violent clash with a soldier, Fiyinfoluwa Opejobi, who was reportedly in town for his marriage ceremony. Another Amotekun officer was left critically injured in the altercation.
According to PUNCH Metro, the incident unfolded after Opejobi, an indigene of the community and newly recruited soldier, was invited for questioning at the Amotekun station over a robbery incident. One of the operatives had raised allegations linking him to the crime, prompting the invitation.
Sources said Opejobi honored the summon on Friday, but by Saturday—after concluding his mini-wedding event—he reportedly set out with two friends to confront the Amotekun officer who accused him. The group allegedly assaulted the officer near Ijesa Roundabout, leaving him unconscious.
In retaliation, other Amotekun officers launched a manhunt and traced the soldier and his friends to a nearby hotel. Eyewitnesses say a bloody confrontation ensued, during which Samuel Tope was killed, and Opejobi sustained a deep head wound.

The Osun Amotekun Corps Commander, Mr. Adekunle Omoyele, condemned the attack, describing it as "unprovoked." In a statement, Omoyele said, “Fiyinfoluwa, dressed in military camouflage, approached our station with hostile intent and made it clear his mission was to deal with Amotekun operatives.”
He added that Tope was ambushed while riding his motorcycle and was fatally struck with a blunt object. “The attack lasted about 20 minutes,” he said, “leaving Officer Tope in a pool of blood.”
Osun Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing. “Based on reports, the soldier used a jackknife during the altercation. One operative died while the second remains hospitalized,” he stated.
Attempts to get a response from the Nigerian Army yielded no results, with an officer directing inquiries to the Ede barracks.
The tragic event has sparked renewed concerns over tensions between security agencies and the need for clearer protocols to avoid inter-agency violence.
