Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited fears of a nuclear escalation in the Middle East, claiming Iran was only weeks away from developing a nuclear weapon, while also hinting that U.S. military intervention remains an option.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Trump said, “I’ve been saying for over 20 years that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon… I think they were a few weeks away from having one.” He added that if Iran succeeds, the consequences would be catastrophic, stating, “Others won’t use it, but I believe they would.”
Trump’s claims starkly contrast the U.S. intelligence community’s most recent assessments. In March, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard testified that Iran has not resumed its nuclear weapons program since 2003.
