In a bold operation, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cracked down on a major illegal skin-bleaching ring operating in Sabon Gari, Kano.
The bust, which led to the arrest of six individuals, follows weeks of undercover surveillance and public outcry over the sale of unapproved and toxic cosmetic products.
According to Mr. Kasim Ibrahim, NAFDAC’s Kano State Coordinator, the illegal products were not only being sold in broad daylight but also glamorized online under the guise of beauty spa treatments.
“These creams were dangerously marketed as miracle solutions, but they contain harmful and banned substances that could lead to permanent skin damage and even cancer,” Ibrahim stated.
The operation involved mystery shopping and surveillance to gather evidence discreetly. The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement team then raided targeted shops, seized harmful creams, and sealed several outlets—some permanently. Those arrested were reportedly distributing fake or unregistered skin-lightening products.
“This isn’t just about cosmetics—it’s a public health issue,” Ibrahim warned. “We are committed to protecting Nigerians from dangerous products that are harming our women and youth.”
NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment under the leadership of Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye to continue purging the market of harmful products, not just in food and drugs but across the cosmetics industry.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, while the agency continues its nationwide crackdown.
