Liverpool FC has officially announced the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, setting a new British transfer record in the process. The 22-year-old German midfielder has joined the Premier League giants for an initial £100 million, with the total fee potentially rising to £116 million through add-ons.
Wirtz, who had a standout season with 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances, underwent a comprehensive two-day medical on Merseyside before being unveiled on Friday night, completing media duties and club formalities.
The former Bundesliga star had attracted intense interest from Bayern Munich, but Liverpool succeeded after weeks of negotiations that saw Leverkusen lower their asking price from €150m (£127.6m).
Speaking to the club’s official website, Wirtz expressed his excitement: “I feel very happy and proud. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I want to experience something new, and the Premier League is the perfect next step.”
He added that former Liverpool players encouraged his move, telling him that the club and its atmosphere are ideal for his playing style.
Wirtz is targeting Premier League and Champions League glory, stating, “I would like to win everything every year. First, we do our job, and then we win.”
The signing is part of Liverpool’s aggressive summer overhaul. The Reds have also completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million and have agreed a £40 million deal to acquire Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, who is expected to undergo a medical next week. Liverpool is also eyeing Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace.
