Shock in Ekiti: 55-Year-Old Man Buys Petrol to Burn Wife and Children, Arraigned in Court

In a disturbing development in Ekiti State, a 55-year-old man, Afolabi Samuel, has been arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado Ekiti for allegedly threatening to kill his wife and children by setting them on fire.

According to police reports presented in court on Wednesday, the defendant committed the offense on June 22, 2025, around 9:00 AM, at Olokuta Matthew area in Ado Ekiti. The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, revealed that Mr. Samuel had purchased petrol and kept matches by his side, allegedly planning to set his wife and children ablaze.

The incident caused panic in the community, with neighbors reportedly raising the alarm that led to police intervention. The prosecutor added that the defendant’s behavior was also deemed a breach of public peace, further violating provisions under Sections 69 and 181(d) of the Ekiti State Laws of Nigeria 2021.

During the court proceedings, the defendant’s legal representative, Joy Raphael, pleaded for bail, arguing that Mr. Samuel would not abscond from justice. After considering the plea, the Chief Magistrate, Mr. Abayomi Adeosun, granted bail in the sum of ₦50,000, with one surety in like sum.

The Magistrate adjourned the case to July 22 and cautioned the defendant to maintain good conduct ahead of the next court appearance.

The case has stirred conversations around domestic violence and mental health in the state, prompting calls for greater societal intervention and family support mechanisms.
