Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere‑Ekun has urged caution in integrating artificial intelligence into the judiciary, stressing that technology should support—not supplant—judicial decision-making.

Speaking at the University of Lagos during a lecture titled “Justice in the Digital Age: Leveraging Technology for an Efficient and Accessible Judiciary in Nigeria,” Kekere‑Ekun acknowledged AI's potential to streamline case management and improve legal access through e-filing, virtual hearings, and data analytics.

However, Punch News reports her warning: “AI is a tool to augment, not replace, judicial wisdom. The deployment of AI must be approached with caution. Ethical oversight, data privacy and algorithmic bias must be carefully considered to avoid unintended injustice.”

The CJN highlighted early efforts like Law Pavilion’s legal tech solutions and e-access to law reports, noting that AI-assisted workflows are gaining traction among judges and registrars.

She also underscored significant challenges, pointing to uneven infrastructure, legal ambiguity over virtual proceedings, and risks around data privacy and algorithmic bias.
