St John Vianney Science College wins UK Nigeria debate championship 2025



A Nigerian secondary school, St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu in Anambra State, has made international headlines after emerging as champions of the inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, defeating top British and Nigerian schools.


The virtual event, which took place on June 19, 2025, featured high-ranking schools from both nations. According to competition details, four schools represented Nigeria: Britarch Schools, Abuja; Sure Start School, Abuja; St. Augustine’s College, Jos; and St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu.


On the UK side, participants included Central Foundation Girls’ SchoolMaghull High School, and Shireland High School.


After several intense rounds of debate, St. John Vianney Science College advanced to the final, having defeated British contenders Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School in earlier rounds. The final match turned into an all-Nigerian showdown between the Anambra champions and St. Augustine’s College, Jos.


In a display of confidence, research, and oratory excellence, St. John Vianney secured a decisive victory, claiming the historic title of Inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Champions.
