The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested six Nigerians and two Chinese nationals for illegal mining activities in Ogere, Ogun State.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the suspects were apprehended during a sting operation on May 9, 2025. The arrested individuals include Zhang Hang Lin, Gao Pei Hai, Matthew Mathias, Oluwaseun Amoo, Wasiu Ademola Alao, Ajibola Nurudeen, Ibrahim Yinusa, and Saidu Shuaibu.
During the raid, three trucks loaded with sacks of suspected ground lithium powder were seized. Other recovered items include:
✔ Unidentified solid minerals
✔ A Toyota 4Runner SUV
✔ Mobile phones & ATM cards
✔ Samples of low-grade lithium
✔ International passports
✔ Four LED flashlights
The EFCC Lagos Zonal Directorate (Ikoyi) is currently investigating the case, which highlights the growing issue of illegal mining in Nigeria. Authorities warn that such activities deprive the nation of revenue and damage the environment.
