Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has announced plans to donate 99% of his $200 billion fortune, leaving just 1% for his family. In a blog post on Gates Notes, the Microsoft co-founder revealed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will shut down by 2045 after distributing all funds.

“I refuse to die rich,” Gates declared, emphasizing urgent global needs. The foundation, launched in 2000, has spent over $100B on health, education, and poverty alleviation, including vaccine development and polio eradication.
Originally, the foundation was to close decades after his death, but Gates accelerated the timeline for faster impact. The remaining 1% (~$1.6B) may go to his three children.

Despite criticism over influence in global health, Gates remains firm. “Like any private citizen, I decide how my money is used,” he told AP.
