Pregnant Woman, 5 Others Killed as Land Dispute Sparks Deadly Violence in Ebonyi State

Tragedy struck in Ebonyi State this week as a violent land dispute between two neighboring communities escalated into bloodshed, leaving at least six people dead, including a pregnant woman. 

The clash, which erupted on Tuesday, involved residents of the Ndukwe community in Amasiri, Afikpo North Local Government Area, and those from Okporojo in Oso, Edda Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses and local reports revealed that the violence began over a long-standing land boundary disagreement, which had previously sparked tensions but never reached this level of devastation. Homes were burned, properties destroyed, and families displaced as the violence swept through the affected areas.

In a swift move to contain the unrest, the Chairman of Edda LGA, Chima Ekumankama, confirmed that a large contingent of security operatives had been deployed to both communities to restore order and prevent further violence. "I can assure you that normalcy and peace have returned to the area. I personally visited the affected locations and witnessed firsthand the level of destruction,” Ekumankama said during a press briefing.

He also commended the rapid intervention by Governor Francis Nwifuru, who ordered the deployment of state security agents shortly after the conflict began. Authorities have not yet confirmed if any arrests have been made or whether compensation will be offered to affected families.

The state government is currently working with local leaders to initiate peace talks and prevent a recurrence, as communities mourn the loss of lives and destruction of livelihoods.
