NGO Empowers Nigerian Girls with Menstrual Hygiene Education, Reaching Over 360 in Three States

The non-profit organization, Feminine Hygiene Support (FHS), recently empowered over 360 Nigerian schoolgirls through its "Help a Girl Child" initiative, which educates young girls about menstrual health and hygiene. 

Founded by Boluwatife Ogundoro, the initiative targets underprivileged communities across Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos, where high menstrual product costs and limited resources often create obstacles for girls.

On September 26, 2024, the FHS program kicked off at Olopomewa Community Secondary School in Oyo, educating 96 girls. 

It continued on September 30 at Olorunda Community High School in Ogun, benefitting 156 girls, and concluded on October 11 at Reservation Senior Secondary School in Lagos, reaching 108 girls. 

Each participant received free sanitary pads and educational pamphlets that addressed menstrual health, cycle tracking, and hygiene practices.

FHS’s mission is to dispel the stigma around menstruation, empowering girls to manage their health confidently. 

Through interactive sessions, the girls learned about biological processes, debunked hygiene myths, and gained insights into managing their menstrual cycles. 

A survey conducted during the program revealed a lack of awareness among students about menstrual hygiene, particularly concerning safe cleaning practices. The FHS team emphasized proper methods to promote well-being.

Ogundoro stated that the organization plans to expand its reach, with future programs focused on comprehensive education surrounding women’s health, reproductive rights, and continued stigma reduction. 

With each session, FHS strives to create a safe and informed environment for young girls in Nigeria.
