Women Advocate for Land Rights at the United Nations, Urging Action on Climate Change Impacts

Women from around the world are delivering a powerful message to the international community at the United Nations in New York, demanding better land rights for women and girls in the face of worsening droughts, wildfires, and other climate change impacts. 

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) highlights that women and girls are disproportionately affected by drought, land degradation, and desertification. 

This year's Desertification and Drought Day focuses on the theme 'Her Land. Her Rights.' as women play a vital role in agriculture, yet own less than one-fifth of land worldwide. By removing legal barriers to land ownership and inheritance, empowering women to make decisions on land management, and promoting gender equality, soil health improves, agricultural yields increase, and families benefit from improved nutrition, health, and education. 

The event features leaders, gender equality champions, and advocates for women's land rights, emphasizing the urgency of action on climate change and the importance of women in sustainable land management. 

The UNCCD also unveils a new analysis showcasing the benefits of women's equal land rights, including increased agricultural production and reduced malnourishment. As part of the global campaign 'Her Land. Her Rights.', events will be held worldwide to raise awareness about desertification, land degradation, and drought.
