Students from 7 African Countries Embrace NECO Examinations, Says Delta State Coordinator

Students from seven African countries are currently taking the Senior School Certificate Examination and the Basic Education Certificate Examination, both organized by the National Examination Council (NECO). The Delta State Coordinator of NECO, Princes Nkechi Ugbaja, revealed this information during a coordination workshop held in Asaba for animal husbandry and home economics examiners.

According to Ugbaja, the governments of these seven countries have adopted the NECO examination system, which originated in Nigeria. She clarified that the widespread assumption among parents that the NECO examination lacks international recognition is incorrect. She debunked the false claim that the examination is exclusively conducted within Nigeria. The African countries where NECO examinations are conducted include Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Niger Republic, Togo, Benin Republic, and Gabon.

Ugbaja emphasized the importance of handling the home economics and animal husbandry subjects with great care due to their sensitivity. The purpose of the workshop was to provide participants with guidance regarding their tasks, the necessary materials, and adherence to the designated time frame.

The State NECO Coordinator stressed that proper coordination would guarantee high-quality results, urging participants to utilize the knowledge gained from the workshop to maintain the credibility of the examination in the state. In a similar vein, Mrs. Hope Igumbor, the Director of Science Education in the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, highlighted the annual nature of this gathering for selected home economics and animal husbandry teachers in the state.

Mrs. Igumbor emphasized the importance of conducting the examination smoothly and urged candidates to refrain from engaging in any form of malpractice. The preliminary coordination workshop aimed to promote consistency in evaluating the practical aspects of home economics, thereby enhancing students' performance in the external examination.
