Race Against Time: Search for Titanic Submersible in Peril as Oxygen Dwindles
The exact location of the Titanic submersible and the well-being of the five crew members remain unknown, heightening concerns as the vessel's oxygen supply may last less than 10 hours. The urgent mission to locate the submersible is underway, but time is running out.
According to Dr. Ken Ledez, a hyperbaric medicine expert at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland, the crew faces not only the danger of running out of air but also potential hazards associated with the loss of electrical power. The vessel's electrical system plays a crucial role in regulating the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the submersible.
As oxygen levels decline, the crew's exhalation will release a higher proportion of carbon dioxide, potentially leading to fatal consequences. Excessive amounts of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream, a condition known as hypercapnia, can prove deadly if left untreated.
Former Royal Navy submarine captain Ryan Ramsey expressed concern after examining online videos of the interior of the Titanic submersible. He found no evidence of a carbon dioxide removal system, also known as scrubbers.
Furthermore, the crew faces the risk of hypothermia as the submersible is likely to be submerged in near-freezing water temperatures of approximately 0°C. Without electrical power, the submersible cannot generate heat, exacerbating the danger of hypothermia.
The combined threats of hypothermia, diminishing oxygen, and the accumulation of carbon dioxide within the submersible severely limit the crew's ability to establish contact with the ongoing search and rescue mission. The traditional method of attracting attention by tapping on the hull at regular intervals becomes increasingly challenging.
While the Coast Guard warns that the remaining oxygen supply is likely to be critically low, the crew may be able to conserve their limited resources for some time. Slowing their breathing could also aid in extending their oxygen reserves, although the stressful conditions they face make this task challenging.
Dr. Ledez suggests that the crew could potentially spread carbon dioxide-absorbing granules or reduce their power consumption if electrical power is still available. Regarding food and water, the Coast Guard confirms the presence of "limited rations" on board but cannot provide specific details.
Despite the numerous challenges, Dr. Ledez cautions against prematurely calling off the search-and-rescue operation, emphasizing that survival might still be possible even in extremely low-oxygen conditions.
