Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, positioning himself as a genuine alternative to Nigeria's traditional political establishment.
The activist announced his upcoming bid on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s flagship political program, *Politics Today*.
Sowore, who flew the flag of the African Action Congress (AAC) in both the 2019 and 2023 general elections, revealed that the party is scheduled to conduct its primary elections next week.
While declining to state whether he would emerge as the sole consensus candidate, he expressed absolute confidence in the party's trajectory.
“I am running to win,” Sowore declared.

“And it is because, as I’ve said several times, all the political parties are equal, and the better candidates should be able to win elections in this country—people with ideas. Times are harder. Nigeria is in bigger trouble.”
The activist launched a scathing critique against President Bola Tinubu and other prominent opposition presidential hopefuls, arguing that their collective policies have repeatedly failed the nation.
He asserted that the mainstream political class has locked Nigeria into an endless cycle of poverty, insecurity, and economic pain, urging citizens to reject the establishment in favor of fresh, liberation-driven ideologies.
Addressing administrative matters concerning the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sowore explained that the AAC has temporarily held back from submitting its final membership database.
He noted that a recent landmark court judgment has permitted political parties to reopen their online portals, prompting the AAC to further expand its digital registration drive ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
