The Spanish top-flight witnessed a dramatic and emotionally charged conclusion to its league season on Saturday as three LaLiga clubs—Girona, Mallorca, and Real Oviedo—were officially relegated to the Segunda Division.
A nerve-shredding final matchday sealed the fate of the trio, leaving them at the bottom of the table after all 38 matches were completed, while defending champions Barcelona had already wrapped up the title weeks ahead of arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Girona suffered the most stinging heartbreak of the afternoon, drawing 1-1 at home against Elche at the Estadi Montilivi.
Needing an absolute victory to escape the drop zone, Girona conceded a brilliant first-half opener to Elche’s Alvaro Rodriguez in the 39th minute.
While Girona’s skipper Arnau Martinez equalized shortly after the halftime interval to restore hope, the home side failed to find a late winning goal, confirming their relegation with 41 points just two seasons after finishing third and securing Champions League football.
Concurrently, Mallorca did everything within their power by securing a dominant 3-0 home victory over basement side Real Oviedo, thanks to goals from Pablo Torre, Manu Morlanes, and a striking contribution from Vedat Muriqi.
The win brought Mallorca to 42 points, level with both Osasuna and Levante, who lost their respective final fixtures to Getafe and Real Betis.
However, Mallorca was ultimately relegated due to Spain's head-to-head tiebreaker rules, which favored their rivals and left the island club in the 18th position.
Real Oviedo, who had already been mathematically doomed to the bottom spot weeks prior, finished the difficult campaign in 20th place with 29 points.
